Hello America:

Part VII — When Prejudice Dimmed the American Light:

With the Statue of Liberty came a promise —

a beacon lifted high,

a nation declaring that dignity belongs to all who seek it.

Yet even as that torch rose, shadows gathered beneath it.

Race and Ethnic prejudice began to swell —

not born of strength, but of fear.

Fear is the great fog of the human spirit.

It blurs what is true.

It twists what is unfamiliar into something threatening.

It convinces good people to doubt their neighbors and to mistrust the very decency they once cherished.

And so hatred crept in.

Mistrust hardened.

Not everywhere…

not in every heart…

but enough to cloud the clarity that had guided America through its better days.

The loss of decency did not happen in a single moment.

It happened in quiet surrenders —

a look turned away,

a silence held too long,

a belief that someone else would defend what is right.

Yet even then, the torch in the harbor still burned.

It burned as a reminder that America’s promise is larger than its fears, and that decency, once dimmed, can be rekindled.

MADA rises now not to condemn the past,

but to restore the clarity that prejudice once obscured.

For when we see one another clearly,

we remember who we are.

And when we remember who we are, decency returns
